My first day in Santana Boarding Primary school, Awo-Omama in Oru Local Government Area of Imo state Nigeria remains unforgettable. My parents in a bid to give me the very best searched for the best school within the neighborhood where they were working and top on the list was the school i mentioned above.
On the day of resumption, my parents took me down to the school with my belongings as listed on the prospectus for new intakes. At the school while registration was going on, my dad left to attend to his patients at the hospital because he is a medical personnel. My mum was left with me and she had to take care of the registration alone. The registration was over but my mum could not just leave me all by myself there in school so she stayed back in my dormitory while i went for my lunch at the refectory.
At the refectory, i was among the new students and we are yet to be given a dining table. Each dining table has twelve students sharing it and so the Refectory Supervisor has to check for table that have less than twelve students to assign to us. While we were waiting, the Housemistress for St. Anthony Boys House came to where i was standing and took me by the hand to a table in the dining hall. I was trying to settle down and grab my own share of the meal when the Refectory Supervisor hurriedly came and uprooted me from the table. This happened twice and those two times i kept my cool. Then came Miss St. Anthony like we called her in those days, she held my hand for another thrust and instantly i got my hand off her big strong palm with a push. The woman in shock walked gently into the dining hall, alerted the Refectory supervisor and both women ran towards me with remorse and apologies. That was how i got my table.
Before i got to the dormitory, my mum had been hinted on the incident. She hurriedly stood up as she saw me coming in and said to me "I would be leaving now, its obvious you can take care of yourself and even your friends."
I did not understand what that meant till the day i confronted the community leaders in Itire Ikate Local Council Development Area in Lagos State of Nigeria on the issue of giving the less privileged kids a sense of belonging through a CHARITY FUNFAIR. Truly who we are is a demonstration of what we do.
